Watercolor Painting of Odiyan Manikyan (Mohanlal)

Odiyan Manikyan | The King of Darkness | Watercolor Painting

Odiyan is one of the most anticipated Malayalam movie to be released in theaters. Everyone is mesmerized by the look and mannerisms of the protagonist played by legendary Malayalam cine star Mohanlal, as the first poster of the movie was released. I too got intrigued by the expression which Mohanlal portray in this particular portrait I paint in watercolor.

Why watercolor? I chose watercolor due to its transparent nature and the vibrant glazing. I used only four colors to paint this portrait viz. Burnt Sienna, Peacock Blue (Mijello Mission), Yellow Ochre (Camlin) and Payne’s Gray (Winsor and Newton). Kindly view the time-lapse video below to understand the process of sketching the portrait and then painting it to a wonderful artwork.

I started with a wash of lighter shades of Payne's gray, burnt sienna and peacock blue in the background. As the paper dried, I started painting the hair with burnt sienna and Yellow Ochre. Then, I moved to the forehead, chin, and jaw. Once the paint dried up, I started giving dimensions to the thick and unkempt mustache and beard. Finally, the eyes were colored to complete the painting.

Kindly leave feedback as a token of appreciation for my effort in creating a colorful portrait. Thank you for your time. :)
